- Insomnia
- Headache
- Diarrhoea, nausea
- Tiredness
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
- Decreased appetite, weight loss
- Anxiety, nervousness, restlessness, abnormal dreams
- Dizziness, sleepiness, tremor, taste changes, poor concentration
- Blurred vision, palpitations, flushing, yawning
- Vomiting, indigestion, dry mouth
- Rash, itching, excessive sweating
- Joint pain, frequent urination
- Reduced sex drive and other sexual problems
Serious effects reported
- Suicidal thoughts or behaviour
- Serotonin syndrome
- Seizures or mania
- Abnormal heart rhythm, including QT prolongation
- Low blood sodium
- Severe allergic or skin reactions
- Bleeding, including from the stomach

Warnings & Precautions
Do not use
- If allergic to fluoxetine or any other ingredient
- With irreversible non-selective MAO inhibitors
- With metoprolol in heart failure
Take special care
- Monitor for suicidal thoughts, especially early in treatment or after dose changes
- Heart rhythm risk factors, epilepsy, history of mania, liver problems, diabetes, bleeding risk, glaucoma
- Stop if a rash or allergic reaction appears
- Reduce gradually when stopping; effects can last several weeks because fluoxetine is eliminated slowly
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Avoid in pregnancy unless clinically needed
- Fluoxetine passes into breast milk
Driving
- Avoid driving or using machines until you know how the medicine affects you
Interactions
- MAO inhibitorsat least 2 weeks after an MAOI before starting fluoxetine, and at least 5 weeks after stopping fluoxetine before starting an MAOI
- Tamoxifenavoid where possible
- Medicines broken down by CYP2D6 (for example flecainide, tricyclic antidepressants, risperidone)lower doses may be needed, including for 5 weeks after fluoxetine is stopped
- Lithium, tramadol, triptans, linezolid, St John's wort and other serotonergic medicinesrisk of serotonin syndrome
- Anticoagulants, antiplatelets and anti-inflammatory painkillersincreased bleeding risk
- Medicines that prolong the QT intervalcaution
- Alcohol is not advised
